At mecwacare, we stand with our community to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – a global call to end the abuse, neglect and mistreatment of older people.
Sadly, elder abuse is most often carried out by someone known to the older person – typically an adult child or close relative. In the past year, 14.8% of Australians aged 65 and over reported experiencing abuse. That’s an estimated 160,000 older Victorians annually.
This is a shameful statistic – and one that should concern all of us. We all have a role to play, whether it’s providing education and supporting older people and their families, to being a listening ear, and helping older people access the support they need to feel safe and respected.
Women are also disproportionately affected, making up two-thirds of those who seek help from Seniors Rights Victoria. People from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, LGBTQI+ individuals and those in rural and regional areas are especially vulnerable.
Our commitment to the wellbeing of older Australians is central to everything we do – from residential aged care to affordable housing, in-home support and community services. We are present, stand ready to support our clients, and understand that security, connection and thoughtful action form the foundation of ageing well.
As the number of older Victorians continues to grow, it’s more important than ever to raise awareness, speak out and ensure strong systems of care and support are in place.
