mecwacare Barry Fenton Centre, Malvern East

mecwacare’s Barry Fenton Centre (formerly known as Bowen Street Centre) in Malvern East offers social group programs, strength training, podiatry, day trips, activities for people with an acquired brain injury, and a carers’ support group. Services are offered to people over 65, or younger people who have a disability, under the Home and Community Care Program for Younger People (HACC PYP) and National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Support Groups

Support groups provide opportunities for people to connect with their community across the week. This includes people over 65, people living with dementia and people with disabilities, who can participate in a variety of engaging, rewarding programs and activities at our day centre, as well as in the community.

Monday Music Program

mecwacare’s Monday Music Program offers fun and interactive music activities. These activities include performances by local entertainers, while mecwacare’s trained staff assist with the program and afternoon tea is provided.

Who can join? Persons living in Supported Residential Services in the City of Stonnington and surrounding areas, persons with a disability, or persons over the age of 65.

When: Every Monday from 1pm to 2pm

Monday Mixed Social Program

Our mixed social program on Mondays offers a broad range of activities, including gentle exercises, musical entertainers, guest speakers, socialisation, games, and quizzes. We also arrange restaurant outings, community outings, cultural days, and art and craft classes. mecwacare’s trained staff run regular planning sessions where client input is used to develop monthly program activity calendars. Morning tea is provided. Participants make their own way to the Centre by taxi or other means as arranged.

Who can join? People who live in the Southern Region, who are over the age of 65, or who have a disability.

Tuesday Day Trip

mecwacare’s Tuesday Day Trip Program plans and arranges weekly outings in the community to restaurants and local attractions. Clients meet at the Barry Fenton Centre for morning tea before heading out in the bus to enjoy social activity and lunch outings. Limited transport is available.

Who can join? People who live in the Southern Region, are over the age of 65.

Wednesday Happy Achievers Program

Our Happy Achievers Program offers gentle exercises, musical entertainment, art and craft, guest speakers, games, and socialisation. We also arrange community outings community to restaurants and local attractions. Limited transport is available.

Who can join? People who live in the Southern Region, are over the age of 65.

When: Every Wednesday from 10am to 3pm.

Thursday Go Getters Program

Our Go-Getters Program offers a broad range of activities for people with an acquired brain injury, including gentle exercises, musical entertainers, guest speakers, and socialisation. We also arrange community outings, cultural days, and art and craft classes. mecwacare’s trained staff facilitate regular planning sessions with participants to develop monthly program activity calendars. Morning tea is provided and Participants make their own way to the Centre either by taxi or other means as arranged.

Friday Mix-It-Up Program

mecwacare’s Mix-It-Up Program offers a broad range of activities for people with an acquired brain injury and disability, including gentle exercises, tai chi and meditation, musical entertainers, guest speakers, games, quizzes, and socialisation. We also arrange outings, cultural days, and art and craft classes. mecwacare’s trained staff facilitate regular planning sessions with participants to develop monthly program activity calendars. Morning tea is provided. Participants make their own way to the Centre either by taxi or other means as arranged.

Who can join? People with an acquired brain injury or disability that live in the Southern Region and surrounding areas.

When: Every Friday from 10am to 2.30pm.

Strength Training

Strength training helps you regain and maintain muscle strength, as well as improve balance, flexibility, bone density, and coordination. It can also reduce the risk of falls, while increasing your confidence and wellbeing.

As part of mecwacare’s strength training program, our trained staff and a qualified fitness instructor design progressive training to suit your existing fitness level. Your progress is regularly monitored throughout the program. We recommend two sessions per week for maximum benefit.

Who can join? People who live in the Southern Region and are over the age of 65.

When:

  • Every Monday from 10am to 11.15am, and from 11.45am to 1pm
  • Every Tuesday from 11am to 12.15pm
  • Every Wednesday from 10am to 11.15am, and from 11.45am to 1pm
  • Every Thursday from 11am to 12.15pm

Carers’ Support Group

mecwacare’s carers’ support group is an opportunity for group members to share, connect and relax. The carers’ support group provides education, support and opportunity for carers to meet, socialise, share experiences and support each other in their caring role.

This group understands how difficult the role of a carer can be.

Come and share your experiences, exchange ideas, develop networks, build friendships, and be informed by guest speakers who will offer advice, valuable information, and links to services.
