At mecwacare’s John Atchison Centre, Mavis and Jade Lawrence share more than just a workplace. They are mother and daughter working side by side in aged care, and for both, it feels like a natural fit.
Mavis has been part of the John Atchison Centre community since 2018. She came to mecwacare with extensive healthcare experience, having worked as an ICU nurse in Pakistan for 10 years before moving to Australia and continuing her career as a personal care assistant.
Today, Mavis has found her place as a wellbeing and engagement assistant, supporting residents through activities, outings and events that help them stay connected to their community.
“It is my passion,” Mavis said. “I really enjoy making residents happy.”
In 2023, Mavis was recognised as Carer of the Year for her dedication to residents and the care she brings to her role.
Jade’s connection to John Atchison Centre began when she completed her Year 10 work experience at the site. When an opportunity came up in December 2024, she joined the reception and administration team, in what felt like a full circle moment.
“I really love getting to know the residents,” Jade said. “Each one has their own story and it is interesting to hear where they came from and the journeys that brought them here.”
This is Jade’s first role in aged care, and working alongside her mum has given her a deeper understanding of the environment and the work involved.
“Before I worked here, I would just hear about mum’s work,” she said. “But seeing it with my own eyes has given me a lot more empathy. I now understand what busy days look like and why things are done a certain way.”
Working in the same workplace has become part of their everyday life. They start and finish at the same time and share the drive to and from work.
“I feel so happy working in the same place,” Mavis said. “I love the environment, the colleagues, the residents and the support. This place is like my family, so bringing my daughter here felt right. My wish came true.”
This Mother’s Day, Mavis and Jade’s story reflects the many forms care can take at mecwacare, including the everyday connection between a mother and daughter supporting the same community.
