Park Hill celebrates new sensory garden

A shared love of nature and community was at the heart of a special celebration at Mecwacare Park Hill on 20 October, as residents, families, team members and community partners came together to officially open the new sensory garden.

Developed through a collaborative effort involving residents, team members and dementia consultant Rob Richards from It’s Naturally You, the garden has been designed to support wellbeing, connection and meaningful engagement for people living with dementia.

Guests enjoyed a barbecue prepared by our hospitality team, live music from John Carlo Bellotti, and the opportunity to explore the new garden together.

Facility Manager Andrew Alagos, Head of Service Excellence and Enablement Gaye Sheppard, and Rob Richards spoke about the benefits of nature-based approaches in dementia care and the positive impact the garden is already having on residents.

Designed to engage the senses through colour, texture, sound and the familiar scents of herbs and flowers, the sensory garden creates opportunities for relaxation, social connection and meaningful outdoor experiences. More than a garden, it is a welcoming space where residents can spend time outdoors, connect with others and enjoy moments of purpose and joy.

The celebration was attended by residents, families, team members, representatives from Dementia Support Australia and other stakeholders, reflecting the strong community support behind the project.

As guests explored the garden, shared a meal and enjoyed music together, the day highlighted the power of connection and the important role outdoor spaces can play in supporting wellbeing.

The sensory garden will continue to provide a place where residents can relax, engage their senses and enjoy meaningful moments with family, friends and fellow residents.
