| Help build a Gym
Summary: Jessica* is only 18 years old, in the prime of her life.
Late in 2007, she suffered from a brain haemorrhage, changing her entire life. She is now physically disabled and her parents, Peter and Jenny want their daughter to attend the strength training program at the mecwacare Day Centre in East Malvern – but sadly, there is a long waiting list.
Jessica is now classified as having an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). An ABI can occur as a result of trauma, hypoxia, infection, tumour, substance abuse, degenerative neurological disease or stroke. These impairments may be temporary or permanent and cause partial or total disability.
mecwacare's Day Centre in East Malvern (Bowen Street) provides vital social and recreational day programs and respite care for younger and middle aged adults with an ABI and other conditions such as MS and Parkinson’s disease.
mecwacare plans to increase the number of programs for people with an acquired brain injury so as to address the needs of current younger clients and those on the waiting list. However, mecwacare needs equipment appropriate to the needs of a younger group of clients.
Successful fitness programs incorporate physical conditioning, strength training, cardiovascular conditioning and flexibility conditioning. Unfortunately, our current equipment is inadequate for these tasks.
Whilst the cost of running the programs is covered by Government funding, this does not include the cost of purchasing or replacing equipment.
We are asking for your support to help mecwacare purchase this new gym equipment, so as to provide vital programs to young people suffering from an ABI.
