Our History

The mecwacare story is a unique example of a community caring for itself. Since 1959, Mecwacare has responded to the changing needs of the Victorian community by constantly seeking out and adopting new caring initiatives.

In the 1950s, Dudley Lucas the Malvern Town Clerk inspired a group of Malvern City Councillors with the idea of providing the first senior citizens centre in Malvern. Led by Jack Jenkins, the Councillors ran dances at the Malvern Town Hall to raise funds to build the centre on the southeast corner of the Malvern Cricket Ground. Dudley Lucas convinced Council into setting this site aside for the project. The new centre was completed in 1958.

At this time, members of the community responded to an invitation from the Malvern Council to be directly involved in caring for their relatives and friends. The voluntary committee then looked at other needs for older people in the community.

With vision and enthusiasm of the committee and later the Board of Directors, and with continuing encouragement from Council and other government agencies, mecwacare has grown into an organisation providing care not only in Stonnington but across greater Melbourne.
